Anton Ra had long cherished the idea of creating a song where the bass guitar would take center stage. This concept began to take shape in August 2021, when the opening melody was composed. Throughout the autumn of that year, as well as the summer and autumn of the following year, the track was continuously fleshed out with new musical ideas until it was finally released in December 2022. This puts it into that rare category of songs that were conceived, recorded, and released in just a year and a half. Given Anton Ra’s typically sporadic workflow when it comes to writing music, this can definitely be considered a success.
From a musical standpoint, Breath of the Mountains is a unique case. Stylistically blending ambient and post-rock, it is the very first track of this genre for Mixte, which undoubtedly expanded the project’s stylistic horizons. The song’s cold, airy melodies instantly made the author think of clouds and mountains. This inspired the imagery of mountains breathing with their stone lungs and blowing out clouds.
Interestingly, Mixte’s artist, Elizaveta, isn’t particularly thrilled with her illustration for this track, as she doesn’t consider depicting nature to be her strong suit. Anton Ra, on the other hand, believes this piece is one of Elizaveta’s finest illustrations for Mixte’s songs (though, of course, they are all amazing).
