We are launching a series of posts where we’ll be sharing the stories behind the making of the songs from our debut album, Chapter I (link in bio), beginning with ‘Emergence’.
This is the very first song by Anton Ra that he felt confident enough to share with the world.
Emergence was created in the summer of 2009. Its creator was only 19 at the time, which, however, did not negatively affect the quality of the track. The song was born out of Anton Ra’s passion for the Total War game series: it was originally intended as a soundtrack for a modification to Medieval 2: Total War. This explains its overall folk vibe, instrumental nature, and brevity.
Yet, this is a case where the song’s short duration is its actual strength. When re-recording the track in the summers of 2022 and 2024, the author consciously chose not to extend its runtime, preferring to preserve its concise, fleeting essence.
However, some key elements were reimagined:
🎸 All guitars were replaced with bass guitars. This makes Emergence the second Mixte song (after Breath of the Mountains) to feature no traditional guitars at all.
🎻 The orchestral arrangements were completely re-recorded and expanded, significantly enriching the song’s overall sound.
A special mention goes to the song’s foreword. The drum track was recorded by our then-drummer Jens Milo, over which Anton Ra layered the keyboards. The result is an excellent prelude that flows seamlessly into the main track and would make a fantastic opening number for our live sets.
